Professional movers will not load certain items. That is safety and federal hazardous-materials rules, not fussiness. Keep this list on the fridge the week you pack.
Never on the truck
- Fuel and gases — propane tanks, gasoline, lighter fluid, camping fuel
- Paint, solvents, bleach, aerosols — including that half-used deck stain in the garage
- Ammunition and fireworks
- Perishable food — especially in summer; use a cooler in your car
- Plants — they do not travel well in a closed trailer and some states restrict them
Take these to the town transfer station, give them away, or ride with them in your own vehicle if they are legal to transport that way.
Keep with you
- Prescriptions and medical devices
- Jewelry, cash, and small heirlooms
- Passports, Social Security cards, closing documents
- Laptops and backup drives
- Phone chargers and a change of clothes
If it would ruin the week to lose it for 24 hours, it does not belong on the truck. Pack a first-night kit.
Maybe — ask first
Firearms (legal transport rules), wine collections, large aquariums, and wet bar contents need a conversation. Same for anything leaking. We would rather hear about it on the estimate than on the truck.
